LED Room Chrome Field

A dozen drops of liquid metal hang in front of the page, and the page is a window. In the LED room, a white box lit by one strip of coloured light, moving the pointer shifts the walls like a real recess and two drops neck, fuse and part. Switch the material between pale iridescent chrome and dark mercury, and the backdrop between the room, a smooth colour gradient and a seamless dusk horizon. One hue control tints the strip, the room and the horizon.

Mercury, held in a lit room.

Rooms where exactly one thing is wrong. These 12 drops have nothing to hang from, and the walls are only a window.

About this background

Most chrome blobs on the web float in a void. These hang in a place. Pick the room: a white LED box, the kind used for virtual production, with fine dark panel seams and a single bright LED strip across the ceiling whose hue (and saturation, down to white) tints the walls and floor near it. The canvas is the window onto that box; the eye follows your pointer, so the seams and the strip shift as a real recess does and the drops seem to hang in front of the page. Or pick a smooth two-colour gradient, or a seamless cyclorama: a charcoal floor that curves into a dusk sky with one crisp horizon band, a soft key overhead and soft contact shadows. Each drop is a raymarched lump of five lobes, so none is a sphere, and two drift together, neck, fuse and part. The material is chrome (pale, with a thin iridescent film at the edges) or metal (dark mercury carrying bright softbox highlights). Rest the pointer and the drops lean toward it; click and they scatter. A Pause control stops the loop.

Curator’s note

The piece rests on three things, and each one is cheap to keep. Every backdrop is analytic, so switching costs no extra march. The room is a box whose front face is the canvas, and every ray runs from a moving eye through its pixel, so the parallax is real geometry rather than a layer shift. The chrome is just the room again: the drops reflect the same LED panels, with HDR values above one, so the seams bend across them. And the drops are a smooth union of five lobes each, with a second, tighter union between drops, which is the whole reason two of them can neck and fuse. Change the room's constants and the metal follows.

Dry Caustic Room

backgrounds

A high-key white gallery room, seen into one corner. Rippling water light plays down both walls and across the glossy floor, with soft prismatic fringes, and there is no water anywhere. Touch the pointer to the unseen surface and slow rings spread; the caustics bend around them.

An ordered crystal of polished steel balls that pours and pools like water across a concrete floor, lit by one low raking lamp. The terraces and ragged edges of the pile are kept on purpose. Drag the pointer through it and it digs a trench that slumps back in; click and a handful of sixty drops.

A school of butterfly koi hangs in the dry air of a concrete room, inside one shaft of light. The water they belong to is held in the ceiling. The light draws caustics on the floor, and every fish casts its shadow through the beam. Rest the pointer and they come to look; click and they scatter.
